What are these you might ask? The pancakes of the Japanese baby!!
Unlike traditional versions, the Japanese have taken pancakes to new heights…literally.
Originally crafted for after weddings as a symbol of good fortune, and for other celebrations in Japanese culture, Japanese Soufflé Pancakes are all types of melt-in-your-mouth flavours which feel like you’re eating towering clouds of soft, fluffy, airy goodness with every bite.
At the very first encounter, your mouth will undoubtedly begin to salivate because it’s just that good.
I got introduced to these yummy bad boys whilst currently here on a 3 week trip to Toronto at Fuwa Fuwa.
Fuwa Fuwa Pancake House
Based in Toronto, all the way from Tokyo, Fuwa Fuwa is an intimate Japanese Pancake House that specializes in the handcrafted perfection of these soufflé pancakes.
As soon as you walk into the store you’re immediately greeted by a “welcome to Fuwa Fuwa” chorus from the lovely ladies in the kitchen area making each pancake, and the mixed scents of egg whites, vanilla extract and sugar. These smells automatically snort themselves up your nostrils. It’s that intense!
According to them, Fuwa Fuwa means “fluffy fluffy”, and this name fits the brand perfectly because these are exactly what you get on the plate – fluffy fluffy pancakes that make you feel so good about yourself and so good about life with every bite. All of your stresses, anxieties and worries melt away with immediate effect.
Oh! And you eat each dish with the most luxurious-looking gold forks.
Talk about fancy!
I also connected personally with Fuwa Fuwa’s beliefs in spreading happiness, appreciating diversity and seeing every day as a celebration because I visited for all three of those values.
Especially since I left the warm Caribbean continent for cold Canada, to experience the Japanese food culture, to share happy vibes with those closest to me, and to celebrate turning 29 as well. Celebrating my life with Japanese Pancakes was the perfect idea.
But trust me, sometimes it’s difficult to grab a seat because this small pancake house is so popular that it always has visitors coming in like a revolving door. As one table is emptied, it’s cleaned just in time for another group of guests to enter its doors.
Needless to say, Japanese Soufflé Pancakes are all the craze here in Toronto.
If you’re in Toronto, head to Fuwa Fuwa immediately for a taste of Japanese paradise on a plate, and tell them that Shari sent you.
But wherever you are in the world, you should definitely try it!
You can find a Japanese Pancake House near you, or if you’re a creative foodie who loves the kitchen, you can even make them at home.
I promise you, no regrets.
I enjoyed those pancakes so much the first time that I had to order twice!
